Blue Sky Builders is proud to offer to design and build (or build to your plans) a sustainable retreat for you, your family or a group. I will approach this from an attitude of self-sufficiency and sustainability, not from an attitude of paranoia or fear.

What is a Sustainable Retreat?

A sustainable retreat is a property and structure where you can live with some privacy and separation from the chaos and congestion of modern society while creating a life for yourself and your family that has a high degree of independence and self-sufficiency for the long term.

The reasons for wanting to build a sustainable retreat are many:

reduce dependence on municipal services, grocery stores and public utilities
escape the city – crowding, crime, pollution, traffic, noise, unsanitary conditions
isolate from high risk areas during times of social, economic and political strife
increase distance from highways, air traffic routes, factories, powerplants
step outside of the primary areas of government restriction and control
create a simpler and better quality of life for you and your loved ones
be closer to recreation and exercise opportunities in nature
achieve a high level of food and energy independence

This is all about privacy, self-sufficiency and long term sustainability.

Build Your Off the Grid Mountain Retreat

A sustainable retreat property need not look any different from other well-designed and thought out properties.

It should not look like a fortress or call attention to itself in any way other than through its natural form and function. Whatever style or design aesthetic you like can be made to work. Here in Southwest Colorado we like what is called ‘mountain modern’ and that is perfectly suited to all of the attributes listed above. We tend to like buildings with a strong look that feature the structure itself as a major design element, showcasing the natural beauty of steel, glass, stone, timber and concrete. Another option is to build into the terrain, creating a partially underground / earth-bermed house.

The cost for a sustainable retreat will be more than for a regular house, of course, but Blue Sky Builders does not charge a premium for this work. The same fee structure that governs all our construction would apply, so that the only extra cost you would experience would be costs associated with constructing the extra features, using premium materials etc. We do only top quality work, using the best subcontractors around. A sustainable retreat is not a place to cut corners. Plan for it to cost what a premium quality house would cost, and then additional depending on how far you take things.
